Privacy Policy
EX Chess (the "Service") handles your information as described below. The Service doesn't require an account, and we never ask for your name, email address or phone number.
1. Information stored in your browser
- Your game history, game records, sound settings and your cookie choice (browser localStorage)
- Temporary connection details used to reconnect to online games (browser sessionStorage, cleared when you close the tab)
Clearing your browser's site data erases this information.
2. Game information handled by our server
The following is processed and stored on the Service's server, which runs on services provided by Cloudflare, Inc.
- An anonymous user ID issued automatically for each device, and its authentication token, for online play
- Online room settings (variant, time control and so on), moves, results and timestamps
- A record of each finished game: the variant, the numbers needed to rebuild the game, the moves, the result and how it ended, the start and end times, and the computer's level if you played the computer. This covers all games, including games against the computer. These records aren't linked to a name or email address and contain nothing that identifies you.
- Connection information needed for communication, such as your IP address (including processing by the server provider)
We use stored game records to confirm games took place, investigate bugs, and improve the Service, for example by adjusting rules and computer strength.
3. Publication in the game database
Stored game records are published in a game database (/kifu) that anyone can view and replay.
Each record has its own URL (/g/…) and can also be opened there.
What's published: the variant, moves, result and how the game ended, move count, date and time, and the computer's level if applicable. Results are shown as White or Black, and we neither record nor publish anything showing who played.
4. Information sent to third parties
The Service uses the external services below. Viewing and using pages sends information from your browser to these companies. Identifiers such as cookies may be used.

Your choice about Google Analytics
If you're in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, Google Analytics only runs if you accept it in the banner, and that consent is our legal basis for it. Until you accept, the Google Analytics script doesn't load, no Google Analytics cookies are set, and nothing is sent to Google. If you decline, that stays true. The game works the same either way.
Everywhere else, Google Analytics runs unless you turn it off.
To change your choice or withdraw consent at any time, open Cookie settings (also at the bottom of the home page). If you decline after accepting, we stop Google Analytics and delete its cookies from your browser.
We set the cookies _ga and _ga_*, which distinguish visitors and sessions and last up to 2 years.
We remember your choice in your browser for 6 months, then ask again.
To work out whether to ask you, our server reads the country Cloudflare reports for your connection when you open the site. We don't store that country.
5. Sharing with third parties
Except as required by law, we don't share your information with third parties for purposes other than those above.
